History

Winchester, Military City - Local History

Winchester has been a Military City for the last 1,000 years and is still home to local military personnel today. Explore this often-overlooked aspect of the City’s past and find out about Winchester’s Victorian Barracks, and the regiments that have served the City over the last 100 years.
Florence Nightingale in the Crimea
Discover the background of the Conflict in the Crimea that saw the Lady with the Lamp tend to injured soldiers. Find out how the conflict started, who was involved and why nurses like Florence Nightingale were needed.

World War One and Remembrance
Using real artefacts from World War One and uniforms from the period, this workshop brings the Great War to life. Find out how the poppy became the symbol of remembrance and why it is so important. Includes an optional led visit to the local cemetery to learn about War Graves and their symbolism.

World War Two
This workshop delves deeper into understanding the conflict and the regiments that fought in it. Try on uniforms, study documents from the Home Front and handle real objects from the Second World War. Taught across our museums by expert staff, this varied visit sheds new light on the conflict and its impact on Britain today.

Bespoke Visits
Are you looking for a programme that is not offered here? We have the capacity to prepare bespoke visits using our collections to fit other areas of the curriculum. Examples of sessions we have run include the British Experience of Warfare; War, conflict and terrorism - post-1945 conflict including Iraq and Afghanistan; War Horse; and Conflict – does it divide or unite?

STEM

Hide & Seek
Find out how camouflage, magnets and mirrors help soldiers to escape and evade. This innovative STEM session explores how science is applied at war, both in the past and today, to place STEM learning in a real-world context. Designed to support the KS2 science curriculum.

Forces with the Forces
Find out about forces with the forces in this interactive, hands-on science workshop which places forces firmly in context. A tiny, remote island has been hit by natural disaster – can you overcome friction and use air and water resistance to your advantage to deliver supplies to the islanders? Find out with Winchester’s Military Museums. Designed to support the KS2 science curriculum.

Victorious Victuals
An army marches on its stomach but feeding an army is one of the hardest logistical challenges that the modern military face. How do you feed soldiers working in the field? When they are miles from the nearest supermarket, without an oven and in need of a large amount of calories to do their job? Find out in this innovative workshop from Winchester’s Military Museums. Designed to support the KS2 science curriculum (Animals including Humans), this nutrition-based workshop explores ration packs and logistics, having fun with food to support your learning.
